Each year the Glass Academy celebrates the winter season with unique glass creations designed and fabricated by the co-owners, Michelle Plucinsky and Chris Nordin. Many of these items have become collectible over the years such as the signature Michigan Icicle ™. It all started with artist Chris Nordin as he was working with the glass to create a winter icicle in glass for a sculpture project. Chris commented how the icicle reminded him of happy childhood memories of playing with icicles as a child growing up in Sterling Heights, MI. “When we were kids, my brothers and I would spend endless hours finding icicles and pretending we were Nordic Vikings, fighting battles with imaginary swords (icicles) and snow forts that we made. I think everyone growing up in Michigan played with icicles at some point, and the Michigan Icicle ™ is a fond memory of growing up in Michigan.”
The Michigan Icicle ™ retails for $29 in the Dearborn studio and if you’re really adventurous, you can actually make your own Michigan Icicle ™ for $78. While we don’t guarantee yours will look as good as the version that we make, it’s an all around fun time for everyone involved and a perfect gift for that hands on type person.
“People love giving handmade and made in Michigan. All the products at the Glass Academy are all made in our Dearborn studio so they are Michigan Made with pride.” Explains Sue Dougherty, the class coordinator. “We see many repeat customers during the holiday season because they understand the great value we give in our small established art studio.” Other items for sale this season will include our customer’s favorites; signature round ornaments, glistening candy canes in wide ranges of colors, green glass pickles, fancy ornament stands and more!
December gallery hours are extended to 8pm Wednesday-Friday and open Saturday and Sunday 10-4pm. Customers can find the most current schedule listed on the website page along with current studio updates posted on Facebook and Instagram.
