👀 The Story of the Lmk

Not too long ago, at the turn of winter to spring, the glass blowers of the Glass Academy felt as if we were being watched. There were moments, when night fell over the studio, we felt a pair of reflective eyes watching us. When we looked, nothing was there. 

As spring progressed and the days got longer we didn’t feel the presence as much anymore. But still, during late night furnace charging or early morning setup, we still got the sense that we were being watched. 

Their colors were dark in the beginning. The creatures blended into the shadows and sat in the corners of the hot shop. We sensed them under benches, behind the garage, and in the color shelves. They would hide in the molds in the studio, the black bucket, among the pipes, or in the metal shop. 

As you can imagine, in the beginning, no one wanted to be the crazy person who says they just saw something move. So we all had these thoughts to ourselves. 

Then they moved into other areas of the studio, too. They infiltrated the prop area. We could never be sure if we caught a glimpse of a strange pattern, if something had fallen off the shelf, or if it was a pair of blinking eyes.

They were also very good at showing up during times when the staff had their hands full and couldn’t stop to investigate, or the glassblowers were at the crucial moment of attaching a pumpkin stem. We started saying to each other, Did you see that? But we weren't quite sure.

As the studio warmed up, these little creatures started warming up, too. The Glass Academy has a pretty fun-loving crew. Between the music playing, the conversation, and the good vibes, the creatures just couldn’t stay away. They became bolder. The Glass Academy team started to see their faces more often. Still, after catching a glimpse of their eyes, we would see them scurry or roll away, and we were left without being totally sure if we hadn’t made it up. 

We named them. We called them “Lüks” (Looks) because we had to look to find them, and because of their big, bright eyes. 

As will happen when you have creatures living in your hotshop, the Lüks started multiplying. And as they became bolder and moved to brighter and more colorful corners of the studio, the creatures themselves began to change color. It turns out, when a Lük closes its eyes, it blends in very well with its surroundings. That’s why we couldn’t see them at first. But with their newfound bravery, colors, and of course those big, bright eyes, they became impossible to miss. Some took after the bright colors of the fabric in the prop area. Some took on the bright green of the plants that sit in the gallery. We had spotted Lüks and striped Lüks, tall Lüks and short Lüks, bumpy Lüks and smooth Lüks. 

They were so cute! We put out good energy, to see if they’d nibble. They had to get comfortable with us being around. We didn’t go right up and touch them, because we weren’t quite sure what they were comfortable with, or what they were capable of! Eventually, they started opening their eyes around us. Those big eyes are adorable. When they open and close them, it’s like an owl winking at you. 

If you go to the Glass Academy today, you’ll see Lüks just hanging around the studio. They’re very comfortable with humans now, and love to make and go home with new friends!
