OK- we've been trying to stay upbeat and proactive here at the Glass Academy and in our attempt to do so, we researched the virus and images of it and said to ourselves; "Wouldn't it be cool looking in glass!!"
And so, in isolation at the studio, just our family of 4, we started playing around with the idea of how to make the virus in glass and did some prototypes. We posted the finished items on our respective FB pages and the response was crazy. People wanted to buy them.
Fast forward to today. We figured out the pricing ($75 each), giving a straight up $25 to various charities that need the cash flow and that are small businesses like ourselves and we'll be working with the Dearborn Chamber to help distribute the donations.
While we realize this is a serious epidemic and a sad moment, we also realize as artists, it's our duty to bring beauty and attention to the moments that shape our culture. This is one of those moments.
These CoronaVirus's are about the size of a small orange, 3.0"-3.5" round. They sit upright on a small patty of glass and are inscribed with the date they are made. Each is one of a kind and original, made by our family of 4.
We will be taking pre-orders of them so we know how many to make and will continue to make them as long as we are permitted to go to our studio. Since it's only our family making them, know that they are made with love and kindness in an attempt to bring a moment of beauty into your lives.
