We like to have fun here at the Glass Academy and in our attempt to do so, we decided to play around with molten glass and make a Corona virus out of solid glass when the pandemic first struck Michigan.
We figured it would be a great item to throw against a brick wall, keep as a memento, or just as a place holder of a time in history.
And so, early March, with our family in isolation at the glass studio, we did some prototypes to test ideas. If you come to the Dearborn studio, you can actually see the first samples!! We posted the finished items on our respective FB pages since we had the time and the response was crazy. People wanted to buy them and since our business was shut down, perhaps this was a way we could generate some revenue to keep our bills paid during the pandemic.
We figured out the pricing, giving 1/3 of the cost various charities and other small businesses like ourselves during the months of March- August 2020. To date, we have donated over $9,000 to businesses & charities affected by Covid in our region.
While we realize this is a serious epidemic, we also realize as artists, it's our duty to bring beauty and attention to the moments that shape our culture. This is one of those moments.
These CoronaVirus's are about the size of a small orange, 2.0"-2.5" round. They sit upright on a small patty of glass and are inscribed with the date they are made. Each is one of a kind and original, made by our family of 4.
Since it's only our family making them, know that they are made with love and kindness in an attempt to bring a moment of beauty into your lives.
