Create a fun, original glass product at the Glass Academy called the Sporella Mushroom ™, a creative play on the signature glass mushrooms made by co-owners Michelle Plucinsky and Chris Nordin.
This is a beginner level class, no experience working with glass is needed and we supply all the tools, color, and materials to make your unique mushroom. You will make one mushroom per class but people like to sign up in multiples so they can make a series or grouping for their garden or home.
Each mushroom is about 3”- 4” in height with a multiple colors to choose from.We choose a natural look for this year’s colors.
Push, twist, and shape the molten glass into a the shape you’d like to have giving it character AND style!!This class is all about YOU!
What should I expect when I come to the class?
Our instructors will start out by giving you a bit of background information on the Sporella Mushroom ™Then you’ll know exactly what it is your making and why.Next comes a demonstration on how the product is crafted, what the finished product will look like, as well as suggested usage for the Sporella Mushroom ™
We’ll explain hot shop safety zones, how to sit at the bench and use glass specific tools, then you’ll be ready to start.Students will then step over to the bench to make their mushroom using supplies and color specifically set aside for this class.
Teachers will demonstrate color patterns, shapes, and styles, along with gathering the glass, turning the pipe, and keeping the glass on the punti rod.
Watching others is the best way to learn techniques so be prepared to sit and watch fellow students as they make their mushrooms. You may go first and be done, or you may be last and will get your turn after the other students have gone.Remember, you’ll learn by watching so it’s important to watch others and learn how to work with the glass.
Will I be going home with the finished glass Sporella Mushroom ™ tonight?
Once colored and formed, the student’s mushrooms will go into a cooling oven to relieve stress and be brought to room temperature. This process is called annealing and takes about 12 hours. Then our craftsmen will prepare base of the glass, which allows the rod to be placed in the soil so only the glass Sporella Mushroom ™will be above soil level. This whole process will take us a week so your items will be available one week after your class.

Bring other shoes to change into or you’ll forfeit your class to another student or will have to reschedule ($10 fee).
Water or sports beverages are a great idea so bring what you need. Please stay hydrated!Water is always available during class.
Follow the link on this web page, phone us at 313.561.4527, or come to the studio to sign up.Please arrive no sooner than 10 minutes prior to your class.Expect to stay at least 1.5 hours but give yourself longer as classes may run over at times.(This is usually due to prior students running late for class and there is no way we can ‘catch up’, so be patient, you’ll get the same great treatment we find it best if you don’t come in a hurry to get somewhere else.)
