Percolla Reed ™

The Percolla Reed ™ is an original designed product and class ONLY from the creators of the Glass Academy, Michelle Plucinsky and Chris Nordin. You’ll enjoy your unique handcrafted glass garden accent for years to come as you display it proudly in your home garden or houseplants.

This 1.5 hour class (time depends on how many customers in class) will consist of students working with our talented instructors to create, shape and form a decorative solid glass garden accent called a Percolla Reed.  No experience necessary for this fun and unusual class!

The reed is about 4”-5” long with a twisted stem, curled stem, straight or any shape you pick.

COLOR CHOICES:

Red, White, Purple, Blue, Yellow, Orange or Pink

Color is applied in various forms to create designs in the glass or on the surface of the glass.  To create the stem, you’ll need to push the molten glass into a mold to form ridges if you want bumps, roll it on the marver if you want it round, or flatten it if you want a new shape. From there, you can twist, pull or stretch the reed to the shape you’d like to have giving it character AND style!!

This is a beginner level class, no experience working with glass is needed and we supply all the tools, color, and materials.  You will make one reed per class but can sign up multiple times to make a grouping for your garden or home.

What should I expect when I come to the class?

Our instructors will start out by giving you a bit of background information on the Percolla Reed™.  Then you’ll know exactly what it is your making and why. Next comes a demonstration on how the product is crafted, what the finished product will look like, as well as suggested usage for the Percolla Reed ™

We’ll explain hot shop safety zones, how to sit at the bench and use glass specific tools, then you’ll be ready to start.  Students will then step over to the bench to make their reeds using supplies and color specifically set aside for this class.

Teachers will demonstrate color patterns, shapes, and styles, along with gathering the glass, turning the pipe, and keeping the glass on the punti rod.

Watching others is the best way to learn techniques so be prepared to sit and watch fellow students as they make their reeds.  You may go first and be done, or you may be last and will get your turn after the other students have gone.  Remember, you’ll learn by watching so it’s important to watch others and learn how to work with the glass.  At times you’ll participate as a group so be sure to bring your camera and feel free to ask others to take that perfect shot if you attend the class alone.

Will I be going home with the finished glass Percolla Reed tonight?

Once colored and formed, the student’s reeds will go into a cooling oven to relieve stress and be brought to room temperature.  This process is called annealing and takes about 12 hours.  Then our craftsmen will add the steel rod to the base of the glass, which allows the rod to be placed in the soil so only the glass Percolla Reed™will be above soil level.   This whole process will take us a week so your items will be available one week after your class.

 New to the studio?

Also included in this class is a behind the scenes tour of the Glass Academy.  Projects the studio is working on, new shows and events coming up, and a chance to talk with the staff about all your glass questions.  The tour takes 10-15 minutes depending on the size and questions in the group.  You’re guaranteed to learn something new about the Glass Academy during this tour, from the founding partners to the history of the studio and upcoming projects.

 What to wear:

The studio could possibly be cool and nice in the winter/fall months or hot and sticky if it’s summer.  However, inside, it’s always bursting with excitement and possibility!  Cotton clothing is a best, regular jeans are ok and layers work best to stay warm/cool as needed.  Open toed shoes, flip-flops, and heels are not an option; you will not be able to participate should you wear them.  Bring other shoes to change into or you’ll forfeit your class to another student or will have to reschedule ($10 fee).

Water or sports beverages are a great idea so bring what you need. Please stay hydrated!  Water is always available during class.

 Registration:

Follow the link on this web page, phone us at 313.561.4527, or come to the studio to sign up.  Please arrive no sooner than 15 minutes prior to your class.  Expect to stay at least 1.5 hours but give yourself longer as classes may run over at times.  (This is usually due to prior students running late for class and there is no way we can ‘catch up’, so be patient, you’ll get the same great treatment we find it best if you don’t come in a hurry to get somewhere else.)

 Added perks for you!

Any class you come to and participate in, you’ll get 20% off gallery purchases that night, as well as when you come to pick up your work.  Ask for the special coupon when you come to the studio.
