The Journey of Creating House Number 716
In the heart of the Glass Academy hot shop, a few numbers take shape; 7-1-6. It's our house number and I've been trying for some time to get this project off the ground, and by some time, I mean about 12 years now! 😂 Experimental Show #99 is a fusion of skill, patience, and artistic vision. Will I be able to pull it off?!
The Color and Composition
The chosen color, a serene baby blue, is the center of the project. This color will show up against some dark wood and placed upon our light colored house as the identifying house numbers once completed. The process begins with adding a light blue layer of glass, followed by a clear coating over the top. This combination is not mere aesthetics; it's a deliberate choice for its sparkling and reflective quality, ensuring the numbers not only stand out but also bring me joy as I enter the home.
Challenges and Adaptations
Glassblowing is an art that demands constant adaptation. In this video you'll see the number six presents a glitch, a reminder that in art, as in life, perfection is a journey. The struggle is REAL! 😂😂😂 I address these challenges with a blend of technique and improvisation. Every tool, from the string measurement to jacks, plays a role in this intricate balance of creation.
Technique and Tools
The process is detailed and complex. From choosing the right mold size to ensure durability and aesthetic appeal, to the careful application of a specific heat zone using the torch, every action is purposeful. I've chosed a medium-sized mold for the ribs on the outer surface of the numbers, giving me option for thicker and more robust finished number shape.
As the numbers take shape, the challenge of ensuring a polished, finished look emerge. It's not just about cutting the glass from the pipe; it's about refining the ends, using jacks and other tools, to achieve a seamless appearance. This attention to detail is what sets apart a mere product from a piece of art. The apprentice from the Master, it's those little details that really finish the piece. Subtle but necessary.
Artistic Choices and Reflections
The choice of color and the decision to twist the glass to a certain degree are artistic decisions that add character to the project. These choices are not random; they are rooted in a desire to create numbers that are not just functional but also aesthetically pleasing and reflective of the homeowner's taste and personality.
The use of a torch to adjust and perfect each number illustrates the blend of art and science that glassblowing embodies. This is a dance of fire and glass, where heat molds the material into desired shapes and textures. I am so thankful we have these torches to really pull together the polished look I'm going for.
Collaboration and Adaptability
This project is also a lesson in adaptability. From handling unexpected glitches with the number six to adapting techniques for different numbers, I demonstrate a remarkable ability to pivot and problem-solve. This adaptability is not just a skill; it's an essential ingredient in the creative process to have as an artist, so I can learn to ebb and flow as the glass teaches me.
Behind-the-Scenes Insights
This video offers a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes of glassblowing - the preparation of tools, the cleaning of the workspace, and the subtle nuances of working with molten glass. These insights are valuable not just for understanding the process but also for appreciating the art form.
The Final Touches
The final steps in creating the numbers involve attaching small glass pieces of clear glass to the backside, allowing a space for mounting and letting light shine between the wood and the glass. This detail, though small, is significant. It's not just functional; it's a thoughtful addition that enhances the overall effect.
Conclusion
The project of creating house number 716 at the Glass Academy is more than just crafting numbers; it's a testament to the beauty and complexity of glassblowing. It's a story of color, precision, and artistic expression. The journey, with its challenges and triumphs, is a microcosm of the art form itself. The narrative captures the essence of what it means to create something beautiful, functional, and enduring.
As I weave through the process, from the initial gathering of glass to the final number, we are reminded of the power of art to transform simple materials into something extraordinary. The house number 7-1-6, once completed, will be more than just an address identifier; it will be a piece of art that reflects the skill, creativity, and passion of its creator and something fun I can enjoy every time I open the door to home!
What's next?
The mention of future shows in 2024 and plans to answer behind-the-scenes questions indicates a commitment to sharing knowledge and engaging with a broader audience. This openness adds another layer to our business making it not just a personal endeavor but also an educational one. 😃

Crafting Glass Sheep at The Glass Academy: The Artistic Journey of Jacob Nordin
In the bustling hot shop of The Glass Academy, amidst the fervor of the holiday season, Jacob Nordin stands, a figure of focus and determination. He's embarking on his second attempt at crafting a glass sheep, a process that marries artistic vision with the unforgiving precision of glassblowing. This journey, though filled with beauty, is not devoid of challenges. It's a testament to the complex art of glassmaking and the relentless pursuit of perfection.
Jacob's initial foray into creating these glass sheep was met with admiration for their aesthetic appeal. Yet, as any artist knows, the pursuit of perfection is unending. The sheep, while beautiful, still whisper tales of the ongoing journey, their intricate details not quite capturing Jacob's complete vision. The final design remains a work in progress, a canvas where skill and ambition dance in the fiery glow of the furnace.
The road to mastery in glassmaking is long and arduous. It is an art that demands patience, precision, and a willingness to embrace the inevitable cycle of trial and error. For Jacob, each sheep is not just a product but a step in his artistic evolution. The process of shaping molten glass into intricate forms is unforgiving; a slight miscalculation, a momentary lapse in concentration, and the piece can be lost. But it's through these challenges that the true beauty of glass art emerges.
Developing new products in the world of glass art is a time-consuming endeavor. It requires a deep understanding of the material, an intuitive sense of design, and an unyielding commitment to the craft. Each piece Jacob creates brings with it lessons, both in the art of glassblowing and in the personal journey of an artist striving for excellence.
As Jacob stands in the hot shop, shaping the latest batch of glass sheep, one can't help but wonder what thoughts run through his mind. Is it the satisfaction of overcoming the challenges, or the contemplative planning for the next attempt? Perhaps it's the recognition of the journey still ahead, filled with more trials, errors, and eventual triumphs.
We invite you to join us in this artistic journey. Visit the the Glass Academy's Youtube page (link above) and leave a comment on our latest video featuring Jacob and his glass sheep. Just like people, houses come in all shapes and sizes, reflecting the diverse cultures and lifestyles of our global community. Picture this: you're taking a delightful stroll around the world, and every turn unveils a new chapter in architectural history. From the elegant simplicity of Japanese Ryokans to the vibrant hues of Caribbean Bungalows, homes are as unique as the people who live in them. That's why I want to create a new line of glassware, revolving around the house and home. Those special things that define our reality in our special way.
The former quintessential American Dream was the suburban marvel! These houses, with their picket fences and sprawling lawns, have become iconic symbols of comfort and aspiration. They embody the spirit of homeownership, echoing the dreams of millions. But oh, don't be fooled! The USA isn't just about cookie-cutter homes; there's an eclectic mix of styles from coast to coast, from the sleek modernity of Californian villas to the historic charm of New England Colonials.
Finding the perfect home is like discovering a rare gem – it takes time, patience, and a touch of luck. It's a bit like dating; you go through a variety of options before you find "the one". Some crave the cozy embrace of a cottage, while others yearn for the chic minimalism of an urban loft. What makes the best home? Is it the size, the location, or the memories you create within its walls? Perhaps it's the feeling of belonging, the warmth that envelopes you as you step inside. These are all concepts I'm looking to explore.
Imagine painters meticulously capturing the intricate details of rustic farmhouses or photographers documenting the urban skyline, framed by apartment buildings. Houses have inspired countless artistic masterpieces, becoming symbols of shelter, dreams, and the human experience. Artists like Edward Hopper and Grant Wood immortalized houses in their works, evoking a sense of nostalgia and contemplation.
Artists find inspiration in the architectural diversity, the stories embedded in the bricks, and the emotions lingering in the air. Houses become canvases, expressing the dreams and aspirations of humanity, painting a vivid portrait of our shared existence.
I'm interested in the spirt of the home. The essence of the walls, the floor boards, the exterior. I'm looking forward to creating a new line of works that explore these spaces we call home. I'm considering switching around the shape so that keepsake treasures could be stored in the actual house where the roof would come off and you can put things inside. OR, allowing you to choose different roof styles....there is so much to explore!
Share your comments below to give me some feedback. When these houses come to life in the gallery, I'll be sure to share the link so you can watch the evolution of the final project! Thanks for watching! 😃

GIVEAWAY QUESTION: Failure is often a part of experimentation. Can you share a valuable lesson you learned from a failed experiment that helped you grow as a person? Enter now >
Creating these intricate sculptures is a delicate dance between imagination and craftsmanship, a journey that involves multiple stages, each as crucial as the last. We all have different ways of how to create new products and in this video, Jacob will talk to the inspiration behind the ash tray. Yes, I said ash tray! It's a modern version and he's thinking of someone smoking a cigar or the like, making something a bit unique and individual for the elite smoker.
Inspiration for these ethereal creations often strikes from the most unexpected places – a vibrant sunset, the intricate patterns of nature, or hanging out with friends discussing form and function of everyday objects.
Artists find themselves engaged in these conversations and the mind gets excited to think of the endless possibilities they hold. It’s like catching dreams and turning them into something tangible, something real.
The path to perfection is paved with prototypes. Sculptors painstakingly craft multiple iterations, experimenting with shapes, textures, and hues. Each attempt teaches valuable lessons, leading them closer to the envisioned masterpiece. It’s a labor of love and patience, where every flaw is a stepping stone toward brilliance. In today's video, you'll see the first rendition of the idea.
But what happens after the final piece takes shape? Jake must grapple with the business side of art, considering how to sell the work, is there a market for this or is it a gift for a friend or his home?
Pricing the work can become an art in itself, balancing the effort, materials, and creativity poured into each creation. Identifying the right audience, understanding their tastes, and creating a connection becomes essential. After all, these sculptures aren’t just objects; they are stories waiting to be told. Will he put these up for sale? Will he make more in the future?
If you enjoy this creative journey then consider joining us on our YouTube channel, where we unravel these mysteries in our Experimental Shows, posted every week on Sunday at 9am. It's not just a peek behind the scenes; it’s an invitation to witness the magic of creation and to see what's brewing in our minds and hearts for the next Glass Academy products.

]]>Designing Dream Homes: Embracing Diversity in Housing Styles 🏡
GIVEAWAY QUESTION: Tell us about the style of house you live in! Ranch? Two story? Historic? Modern? Apartment? Townhouse? Share your thoughts for a chance to win! Enter now!
I've been itching to create these stunning glass houses for quite some time now and in this show, I begin the experiment. The allure of crafting a series for the gallery has always fascinated me. Houses are as diverse as the people who dwell within them, each with their unique needs and desires. It's utterly intriguing to fathom the myriad ways people envision their perfect abode.
During my recent travels to Texas, I found myself entranced by the innovative, modern houses that adorned the neighborhood. Despite the limited space, these structures stood tall, gracing the tiny plots with their balconies, ledges, and the occasional quaint, one-story haven. What struck me was how each residence catered meticulously to its owner's specific requirements, reflecting their distinct personality and taste.
It got me thinking: if I were to build my dream house, what would it look like? Should it seamlessly blend in with the local architecture, paying homage to tradition, or should it stand boldly as a testament to contemporary design, catering precisely to my needs and aspirations? The possibilities, it seems, are endless!
In my latest video, I delve into the art of crafting a glass house. While the basic structure is clear in my mind, my focus shifted to experimenting with the roof. I found inspiration in a fellow artisan on Instagram, who passionately shared the art of constructing straw roofs while unraveling the mysteries behind the process. The beauty lies not just in the final product but in the exploration of patterns, designs, and textures, an endless tapestry of creativity waiting to be woven.
I invite you to join this creative journey and pause for reflection. Share your thoughts and ideas about your dream home. What architectural marvels dance in your imagination? Is it a cozy cottage nestled among trees, or a sleek, minimalist masterpiece overlooking the city skyline? Your feedback is invaluable in this journey of exploration and creation.
Let’s transform this conversation into a celebration of individuality, where every dream home is as unique as the soul residing within. Your comments will not only enrich our discussion but might just inspire the next glass house design. Together, let's shape a world where diversity in housing mirrors the rich tapestry of human dreams. ✨🏡✨

One day whilst flying through the meadows, Petal noticed that some of her favorite flowers were wilting in the heat. She decided to try and find a way to keep them fresh for longer so that everyone could enjoy their beauty. After much pondering and experimenting with various materials, she eventually conjured up something quite special made of glass: The Pocket Vase!
The Pocket Vase was an enchanted vase, no bigger than your hand, but powerful enough to hold any flower within it without having it fade or die away. Those tiny spring blooms now had a beautiful vase to house them in!! All you had to do was simply snip your favorite spring flowers and voila! A lovely containment vessel that attaches to your wall.
Soon word spread far and wide about this miraculous invention - with more people wanting one for each room in their houses. So as demand increased, Petal set out and traveled across the golden lands offering her new creation everywhere she went. Have you gotten yours yet? Shop Here >
And this is how the Pocket Vase became well known throughout all corners of the land, bringing joyfulness wherever it graced the walls of all the townspeople.
Our 2nd Design blue color is made mostly by the metal cobalt. After a day's work in the studio, we mix some of that in with the recycled glass.
In the melting process, the glass turns into a stunning shade of blue that has become a hallmark of the Glass Academy's glass art. When you come to the gallery, be sure to check out the varying hues of blue found on the 2nd Design display.
With a strong focus on sustainability, the Glass Academy shows how the process of glassblowing can be both beautiful and eco-friendly during our class tours. We have proven that with a little effort and creativity, it's possible to make something gorgeous out of what would have otherwise gone to fill a landfill. The attention to detail, and respect for the environment, make them a must-see collection!
The Glass Academy is an inspiration to others looking to reduce their impact on the planet while creating stunning works of art. Be sure to come and see the variety of products made with this glass, and support this great insight to resourcefulness!
For this year's Glass Eggstravaganza, we made three signature eggs including this 2nd Design Recycle Blue option.
Glass is made from sand, soda ash, and limestone. By recycling glass, we reduce the need to extract these raw materials from nature, reducing the strain on natural resources. And there is nothing wrong with recycling the glass, it still retains all its properties so we can shape and form it the same way we can with clear crystal glass.
Since recycling glass benefits the environment, conserves natural resources, saves energy, and reduces landfill waste, we've been called to recycle since day one here at the Glass Academy. Maybe it’s time you picked up some of this special blue glass for yourself! Check out our recycled glassware collection here.

As any artist will tell you, part of the creative process is coming up with new ideas. And while some people might think that artists just sit around and wait for inspiration to strike, the truth is that a lot of hard work goes into generating new concepts. So how do we do it here at the Glass Academy? With lots of prototypes, testing, and then training, so all of the finished works we present to you are beautiful and top notch quality. Your investment in our work will continue to provide years of joy and happiness.
Let's take a behind-the-scenes look at our design process and see how we come up with new one-of-a-kind art and something that fans will want to collect. Color is always a great influence and a great starting point. It can be used to create a mood or feeling in the finished works, or to provide contrast between elements of the work. So, for example, if we’re looking to create a new glass egg for the spring season, we’ll look at soft pastels, spring colors, and a color mix that seems refreshing and light, while also making sure it’s not the same colors as last year, but in fact complementary to them so you can add to your current collection.
We also love technique. By combining traditional methods with a fresh and modern influence, we can develop an original product that has never been seen before. This is something the Glass Academy is known for! Many studios try to imitate what we do, but when you are the leaders, they can never keep up! Hahaha!!! We continually create new designs and ideas that work together because it’s fun for us and keeps things ever changing. Our customers like this too!!
For example, Michelle is working on a larger tree stump with mushrooms, like she made in show #204, that will be hollow allowing for a plant to be grown in it while matching perfectly with our signature garden gnomes. If you have a gnome, you’ll want a tree stump to match! Stay tuned for those prototypes coming up this month on the Experimental Show.
In the end, it's actually a pretty rigorous process to find the next big thing we want to make and we think that our fans and customers want to buy. We immerse ourselves in what's going on in the world to bring fun and relevant items to market. We read all sorts of design magazines, (our accountant says ‘way too many!’) and blogs; we watch TV and movies; we listen to music; and we explore our surroundings and the trends happening. Then, we start sketching out ideas based on what inspired us and what will match our current products, what can be made successfully in glass. We try out different color techniques and blowing styles until we find the perfect combination for each collection, and plan on a variety of sizes so there are options and everyone has access to purchase them. Once everything comes together, we share our finished products with the world – and that's how our new products are born!
Thanks for following our journey and supporting our work!
Modern glassblowing is an art form that requires expertise, creativity, and determination. Apprentices of glassblowing are often drawn to the craft for its challenge, complexity and unique beauty. Becoming an apprentice glassblower can be a difficult yet rewarding journey.
The first step in becoming an apprentice glassblower is to find the right mentor or apprenticeship opportunity. Finding the right mentor requires both patience and networking skills. A glass blowing mentor will be able to provide critical guidance on how to use tools correctly and safely, proper technique for glassworking, as well as tips on staying patient during times of failure.
Once you have found your mentor, you must then practice and hone your glassblowing techniques consistently. Working with glass requires both physical and mental strength, as glassblowing is a challenging craft to master. Patience is key when learning glass blowing as it takes time to become proficient in the craft.
You can expect to learn many things while apprenticing as a glassblower, such as how to properly handle tools, what types of glass should be used for specific projects, and even insights into the history and modern trends in glassworking. As you practice and gain experience, it's important to stay up-to-date with the latest glassworking techniques and styles by reading glassblowing publications or attending trade shows or workshops.
Finally, safety must always be top of mind for an apprentice glassblower. Glassworking requires a lot of heat, which can be both dangerous and uncomfortable. You'll need to learn proper safety measures such as wearing protective gear and understanding the risks associated with glassblowing.
Becoming an apprentice glassblower is no easy feat, but it can be a highly rewarding experience. If you’re willing to put in the time and effort required, apprenticeship glassblowing will give you the opportunity to explore creativity, hone your skillset, and even discover unique glassworking techniques that may change how glass art is made in modern times.
Contact Glass Academy today for more information about glass blowing and possible apprenticeship opportunities!
]]>I felt that many of you remained silent, the chat bar wasn’t very active, so I thought I'd ask again in this blog post. Was this the first time you had heard of such a thing? Setting your intentions for the New Year in just a few words? Or had you not given thought to the new year yet and what you’d like to manifest in 2023?
This isn't only an entrepreneurs mindset, it can be for everyone. From the very young to the very old, why not create your destiny in the direction of what you’d like to have in your life?
My words: NEW CONNECTIONS, FUN, LAUGHTER. And I’m going for that 100%!! Bring it on!! If you are not fun, I don’t need to be around you. If we’re not laughing together, then I’m not interested. Life is too heavy these days not to be having fun and laughing, that’s my goal for 2023.
And new connections? That one is easy right? We meet new people all the time; at the studio, online, when we travel, etc. But notice, I said new connections. I didn’t say easy, friendly, effortless, new connections (although I may want to change that!). I’m always up for a challenge and already the new year has proven to be fruitful with new opportunities to have these connections.
For instance, a customer reached out this week wanting to take the private class for herself and friends. After she got done saying our products were “silly, ugly,” and “nothing she’d ever put in her home” she continued to tell us exactly what she wanted to make, and the how and why she was capable to do so, although she has never worked with molten glass before.
She wanted “useful, practical, and beautiful items she could put in her home”. Fair enough. Here’s a new connection!
Or, how about the lovely couple, mid 60’s, retired and taking our $35 entry level glass experience last night. The gentleman pulled me aside after class asking, how exactly do you earn a living, because the 12 students in class at $35 each surely wasn’t enough income to pay the staff hired to work that class. (Two teachers, two gallery staff, overhead, materials, etc.) It was a valid question, he certainly wasn’t far off to make that analysis.
So questions develop and the trick becomes how should we answer these people? They are valid questions and comments, and while not exactly soft and fuzzy ones, they are being asked and wanting an answer.
I’ve learned to respond slowly, not react. For every question asked, there are 10x the people who want to ask, but never do. So I usually spin the question back to them. “Why do you ask?” Why is it you care how I make my living? I certainly don’t ask people their wage or salary, how they spend their money, what gives them meaning in their lives, or what brings them joy. Or I don’t ask a heart surgeon to ‘try’ a surgery, or a professional violinist to 'play' a concert with them. And I don’t ask my dentist to ‘donate a free cleaning because you’ll get exposure'. All the crazy things we get asked.
We can get angry and insulted, or we can just get curious and have a conversation. We’ve chosen this lifestyle and somehow we’ve made it work. We’re here sharing our talents and skills, always reaching for new heights, while also allowing ourselves time to create, rejuvenate and regroup.
We all wish the same for you in 2023! So, give some thoughts to those words of 2023, what would you like to manifest for your this year?
And now it's time for the studio to have some down time. We will be closed January 9-16th for a week long staff break. Online shopping is available, but the gallery will be closed for the week while we all chill out and reset for the new year.
We resume with normal gallery hours starting January 19th, 2023. We look forward to seeing you in the new year!

Yes, it’s a modern version of the classic paperweight. I can’t fool you! But really, when was the last time you saw a paperweight, yet alone used one? Traditionally, it’s purpose was to hold down your papers and keep them from blowing about. That’s assuming you had open windows in your office, but these days we have air conditioning and computers. The role of the paperweight has been fulfilled in an era from the past.
Hence, the Meditation Globe™! A decorative, colorful, solid glass orb that one can enjoy while contemplating the mysteries of the universe!
I have mine on our kitchen window sill, and another in the bathroom. While washing dishes (yes, we still choose to do them by hand) or brushing my teeth, I can mindlessly stare into this colorful little orb and lose myself in its twisting colors and bubbles.
Depending how the sun reflects through the window and bounces off the glass, this gazing ball never disappoints!
The cool thing about the Meditation Globe™ is that they are just like snowflakes: no two are ever alike. Even when choosing the same colors, using the same glass shaping techniques, you can never fully duplicate the same look or pattern.
That’s another reason why customers and patrons of the arts continue to take this class over and over, there is always a new pattern and design to explore. We offer this class all year long for repeat visits. There is little room for error or mistakes, rather, only a great chance for beautiful results for every customer.
When I first learned how to blow glass, it was important to learn how to use all the hand tools correctly. That in itself was a skillset that would take years of mastery, but practicing using the tools while making paperweights was the perfect thing for me. Because I learned to blow glass at the Henry Ford museum, and paperweights were part of the collection, they became part of my training, and now part of the Glass Academy’s training too!
Achieving the perfect round globe is no joke! Timing, heat, and proper use of the tools will ensure that perfect round globe. Are you up for the challenge?
We here at the Glass Academy can help you achieve this level of mastery in just one class!! Of course we coach and guide you through everything you need to know, assisting you along the way, so don’t stress about a thing. Our goal is to make this a fun and enjoyable experience with a super cool result in the end.
When you get your finished globe, set it in a place that your eyes will find daily and enjoy the soothing, calm presence it provides. Show off those beauties for the world to see and share your images with us using the hashtag #GAmeditationglobe
Sign up HERE to make your own Meditation Globe™ and enjoy this hands-on class experience!
]]>Each week I'd go to work to learn more about the flowers she had planted, how to harvest them and help prep them for upcoming weddings and wholesale orders.
Everyone needs a hobby, and this volunteer work was the perfect distraction for me. By giving me a break from the stresses of work, and the added bonus of meeting other flower farmers, while acquiring new skills not related to my current field of work.
Allowing me to be by beautiful colors, outdoors in the sun, and also a chance to get my exercise in by planting, pulling weeds, mulching the beds, and eventually harvesting many of the beautiful flowers from the farm was the perfect balance to working at the Glass Academy.
I soon learned, as an extra bonus from this farm, we were granted permission to take home some of the extra flowers on Fridays. Each week the assortment of flowers was different and it gave me the experimental time to play with shapes and colors, textures and patterns.
By mid summer when we were starting to plan for our fall pumpkin shows, I was really inspired by all the shades of purple I had been working with. Talking it over with Jacob, he mixed some colors together and came up with this Signature Periwinkle color.
I have to admit, it took a bit to get the mixture right, and then to figure out the 2 colored stem that adorns the top of the pumpkin, but in the end, Jake was able to pull off a beautiful rendition of this years Signature Pumpkin! Periwinkle Purple!!
The stem is a mix of gold and white which allows some extra depth of color in the stem as it curls around the pumpkin. Each one is handcradted and finished to perfection, while the molten glass is at a very specific temperature. If you wait too long, the stem will stiffen in place and you won't be able to curl it up.
Therefore, it is very essential to know how to properly add the 2 colors and control the heat perfectly to allow the stem to adhere and curl into the perfect position.
As you can see, the pumpkins are stunning! The light purple color has a wonderful depth and quality as the ribs of the pumpkin stretch and pull the color into the various crevices of the mold that shapes the ribs.
We invite you to share in this Signature 2022 pumpkin by purchasing it on our website. A portion of the proceeds will be collected from each pumpkin and a small grant will be given to a farmer of our choice to continue the legacy of creating beauty and inspiration thru nature.
You can find more information about the 2022 Signature pumpkin on our home page.

WE WON THE TITLE!
Yes, we did that! It’s literally 2 weeks ago now and it’s crazy to think that we actually pulled off a Guinness World Record win! But we did!!
The process began in April of 2022. We knew we wanted to have a big summer event where we could celebrate the studio being fully open again, hands-on classes would be offered, BATCH gallery would be full of products available for purchase and we could highlight the new event space. After weeks of discussion with the folks at Guinness, we came to an agreement on the event record: Largest Number of Glass Items on Display.
The number to beat was 1,000 items, this is the baseline for any new world record. We knew the timing was perfect as 2022 is the International Year of Glass, and winning this record would immortalize the Glass Academy as leaders in the field.
Next step was thinking about what those 1,000 items could be. Sure, we could load the gallery with our regular products as the number of products in the gallery is already over 1,000, but we wanted to do something new. Something catchy that people would want to join in the fun.
Breath of Michigan was born!! This event highlighted what we do best; blow glass, talk with the community, have fun and try new things! It was a blast to meet all sorts of new people, to open the doors to the studio again and to highlight glass blowing as a fun way to try something new.
We also worked with some great organizations to pull off the win. We picked the top ten organizations that we have worked with since 2004 and figured out a way we could give back to them. It allowed us to grow our audience and bring attention to the record. What we didn’t expect was the joy everyone got from participating with us in this event. The top ten were phenomenal in promoting the event on their social channels, and this brought us some new customers.
At the same time, we were able to bring awareness and attention to their organizations during The Gathering Point show and the in-studio customers loved learning about them as well.
Now, it’s time to build the structure for the bubbles. We have many ideas on how this is going to happen, but we always have surprises in the building of the sculptures, so we expect the design to change up a bit as we work out the details. The intent is to have the bubbles suspended in a wire mesh cage representing the Great Lakes around the wooden cutout of Michigan. Now we need to figure out how to create the cage in the shape of the Great Lakes. It’s a large feat, but we are up to the challenge!!
Stay tuned for the progress. We’ll be starting in January of 2023 to build this sculpture as we must make more bubbles! Seeing the 1,000 bubbles on the table, we now realize that we probably need closer to 3,000 bubbles to make this sculpture complete. We will be hosting the Breath of Michigan class until the end of the year, but I also suspect we’ll be offering it again in 2023! Stay tuned for details!

Jessica, our resident graphic designer had been working on some new swag items. She’ll order things and get them in the pipeline of our promotional products, but we never really know when they will show up after the final edits. Most of the time, I totally forget these items are coming until the boxes show up.
Once I realized it was from Sticker Mule we tore it open to witness the gold inside. Promotional marketing stickers for our live glassblowing show: The Gathering Point. They looked amazing!! Great quality and very slick. We were super happy with the quality and the product, but then we saw the bonuses in the box!
Hot Sauce?! Could it be true? We opened it up and gave it a taste, not bad! The next question, do we take it home to enjoy or leave it at the studio for our lunches? Let’s just say the bottle is now empty, used up and recycled. Thinking we better place another sticker order to get more! 😉
We also received a Sticker Mule, mule sticker. Yep, that’s right, a sticker of the mule they use for marketing. We stuck it on a red mug, and now it’s the go to mug for the studio. You’ll always know who had it last by where you find it in the studio. Production table? That was Jake. Hanging in the welding area? Chris. In BATCH gallery, that's Christina. The front office? That’s Michelle for sure. Every once and a while, someone else will snag him, and that’s about the only time you’ll find him where he belongs, on the coffee rack!!
However, on our last photo shoot, I snagged him. Enjoyed a fine cup of coffee with him as well while I positioned him around the studio during the shoot. I figured he might as well end up in some social media shots with us. Look for him next time you’re in the studio and see if you can find whose got him.
And as a bonus for you, mention reading this Sticker Mule blog and we’ll give you a special prize for your own coffee mug at home!

In 2019, our July Customer Appreciation show looked like was a lot different than what you will experience this year. It was an in-studio event with all staff working the day of the show. A laid-back vibe that included a snow cone machine and hot dogs cooked on the grill out front for the customers. We pulled out every piece of glass that was a test sample, a prototype and all the class/ teacher samples and sold them for random discounted prices. We just wanted to chill out and vibe with our customers and sell some glass!
Props from the studio that I was tired of using, misc. tools we didn’t need, and a variety of other weird items made their way to the sales table as well. It was our version of a studio garage sale!!
Then came 2020. At the first part of the pandemic, we cleaned the studio and organized it, getting rid of the things that no longer served us. A sort of Marie Condo of the studio. Then, as the weeks slid by, we continued to re-define who we are. Do we really need that grinder we haven’t touched in 10 years? If we were going to use it, now is the time, and I have no desire to do so, do you? We asked this of ourselves with many items around the shop.
Some items made the cut, others filled the dumpster, were donated, or sold. We closed our Cedar Point operation for bigger dreams closer to home and things became manageable. A sense of peace and discovery came back to us. We began to focus on the things that mattered most to us, the creation process, the discovery, the delivery.
In that process, the Gathering Point emerged. Our online, live glassblowing show. We discovered an audience of friends, a worldwide fan club, and more customers interested in our products, services, and our demonstrations of information sharing.
And now here it is, July and it’s time for our Customer Appreciation event. How on earth to do this show now?!! Our customers are no longer local so tables in the studio and hot dogs outside aren’t going to cut the mustard! We needed something bigger, online and all encompassing. It’s taken me weeks to work out the details, kept me up at night, and had me contemplating all sorts of scenarios in my mind. But now the time is up, the final decisions must be made; it’s Go Time! Fingers crossed we’ve made the right choices….
And so- here are the ways we can honor you~ our fans and customers in one brief moment of time.
The event will take place online and in the studio, so the playing field is all encompassing.
We think you are going to be incredibly happy with these offerings and the specialty items you will see on the show tonight. We are so excited to offer you these deals!!!
Are you local? Will you be coming into the gallery? If so, when you arrive, you’ll get greeted with a special surprise. YOU as our longtime fan and customer, will be treated right! Of course, you can shop from home like everyone else, but you can also come in and shop the gallery for items. We’ll have some surprises for you, but you have to come in to find them!
July is typically our month to protype new designs for pumpkin and holiday shows as the studio is so hot and glassblowing only increases the heat. It’s a slower month for us in terms of sales so giving away free shipping has me biting my nails. The cost of shipping anything is a valid cost for a business owner. Boxes, tissue, labor to wrap the items & rising shipping rates, they all cost something. How can we do this for free? We can’t, it’s not a sustainable thing. We’d have to overall raise our prices and “hide” this cost in the product. We are a small studio, making a living, doing what we love. FREE SHIPPING for 3 DAYS, is a one-time BONUS for our customers.
A way we can give back and show our appreciation to you. Our gift to you for watching our shows. Buying our products. Taking a chance on a business you knew nothing about.
Maybe the idea of free shipping will grab your attention? I’m not sure, but we’re going to give it a go. We want each and every one of you to know, these past two years, your business has saved us. Each and every purchase you made, allowed us to take a step forward. To keep the business alive thru a pandemic? That was YOU! Your faith in what we were doing, supporting us all along, that’s what pulled us along to where we are now.
We sincerely hope our small token of appreciation is noted during this brief 3 day event! We appreciate each and every one of you.
To receive the FREE shipping use the code: THANKYOU at checkout and shipping will be removed from your order. As for the free gifts, we’ll add those to your order as we ship them. Trust that we’ll pick the perfect one to match your order!

The world needs beautiful things. The history of our craft goes back to the first century BCE, and in spite of the myriad advances in technology and materials, the basics of glass blowing remain largely unchanged from the earliest days of innovation. We love the idea of thinking about the birth of this art form as more than art; while it seems elemental now, these types of advances were technological revelations, akin to improving processor speeds today or developing electric vehicles.
Glass blowing got its start along the Syro-Palestinian coast and quickly spread across the Mediterranean and across the northern coast of Africa, with workshops popping up in Egypt within just a few decades. That accelerated spread of technology, likely pushed by the seafaring Phoencians and implemented by the Romans as well, highlights a few things. First, it really underscores the need for a more flexible, expressive, and accessible form of making glass; artisans were quick to use the technology to create both practical, everyday items like drinkware, as well as more expressive and decorative pieces. Second, it shows how closely these regions and indeed empires were connected through trade, no different than the world is today.
As is often the case, the center of the technology shifted to locations with a strong industrial and trade base, and in just a few hundred years, the Venetians had really claimed glass blowing as their own. Centered on the small island of Murano, the Venetians specialized in fine glass drinkware, crafting the wide array of vessels we might now associate with drinking wines, sparkling wines, liquors, and more. Over the years, glass blowing remained a fixture in Europe, but through trade, reached nearly every part of the globe over the ensuing decades. The technique survived the Silk Road to China and Japan and remained a treasured art form in the growing courts and empires in what is now the Middle East. In a sense, the technique was ubiquitous, creating practical pieces for drinkware and other needs even in locations that, prior to its introduction, may not have put much emphasis on those types of items.
Glass remained a fixture of the rich, who most likely drank primarily from pewter, porcelain or ceramics, silver or golden goblets. As a vessel, glass is a far superior vessel to these materials, most of which would have been either coated or plated with another material to even be useful. Metals are especially poor materials as the dinner table; silver and untreated steel react terribly to any type of acid, turning black and imparting plenty of bitter flavors. Glass is easier to clean, lighter, and less expensive in most locations.
The Industrial Revolution also impacted the focus of glass blowing. At the turn of the century, a man named Michael Owen invented an automated glass blowing machine to mass-produce a vital new product that played a vital role in the electrification of the world and brought illumination to the masses: the light bulb. The contraption was capable of producing over a million bulbs a day! His patent in 1904 was a huge step forward in the push to bring electric lights to city streets and urban centers, lowering the endemic levels of coal dust and pollution from countless candles and fires in big cities.
Today, both industrial, automated glass blowing and our artisan techniques continue to create valuable and prized pieces that balance function with beauty. Just as important, small centers like Glass Academy are carrying on the tradition of passing down these techniques and stories from generation to generation; for centuries, these secrets have traveled across time from father to son, and now mother to daughter, as a sort of connective tissue that links us back thousands of years.
Ready to learn these techniques yourself? Join a class, bring a friend, or book a private session with your friends!
]]>For Michelle, the growing tide of worry and certainty last February was eerily familiar. The wave of shutdowns and restrictions, and the ever-rising graph of cases, offered up flashbacks to the challenges of the 2008 recession. Small businesses grappled with a purely economic collapse then; in 2020, the very painful element of health and loss made every move more important and more consequential.
As Michigan shut down in March of 2020, we looked inward; it might have been tempting to reach outside and grasp at ideas and trends followed by others in the industry, but the most important change to be made was right here in the studio.
And the studio was quiet. “We furloughed our employees and then as a family spent our days in the studio. Our bookkeeper stayed on and would come to the office to work so we did an overhaul of the office and paperwork. Jacob was home for his birthday and at the time and Lucy lived with us so we ate our dinners in the studio and did some blowing, cleaning, and planning while we waited to see what happened,” Michelle remembered. “Even Po, the family dog, came along for the day.”
For Jacob, the pandemic was taking a step back in time. We all were! It was so cool. In one sense it was like my sister and I jumped back 15 years to our childhoods - living at home with nowhere to go - finding ways to entertain ourselves & each other. It felt like being a little kid again.” Even so, both Jacob and Lucy had matured a fair bit over the past decade, and that meant they were able to add a lot to the important, serious, and ultimately decisive discussions that laid out the future of Glass Academy.
In a lot of ways, it was a process that allowed for space. Every plan or dream or unfinished project moved along created a little more elbow room for something new. Michelle wanted to get down to the priorities: “Basically, we overhauled the studio and dreamed about the things that brought us joy to build on.”
From there, creativity took over. That renewed focus on real priorities started with a gift card promotion that brought in some much-needed revenue and allowed for more ideas to germinate. Imagine it; a 14,000-foot studio with just a few family members and close friends stuffing envelopes and offering up “what ifs” and “how abouts” into the rafters and the heavens.
Even then, we were able to help some of our struggling neighbors. Our next project focused on a coronavirus glass sculpture, giving the pandemic a tangible presence that let us at least try to make something beautiful out of the moment. For each item sold, we donated $25 to a local non-profit or small business, an endeavor that rallied not only our local community but the wider community to the cause.
Still, two fresh ideas didn’t exactly make up for the many events that COVID-19 canceled. We were ready to push ‘Send’ on our press releases for our annual Eggstravaganza, but of course, there was no way to have it in-person at the studio. We switched gears; we upped our online sales game and learned how to run effectively eCommerce business on the fly. Michelle quickly learned how to invoice through PayPal, set up new capabilities for digital sales with Shopify, and found an entertaining, accessible way to bring the studio to people stuck at home around the world.
Facebook Live was, in many ways, the perfect technological answer to many problems. With classes and events paused, we focused all of our energy on bringing our best to two shows per week. It’s proven a winning recipe; two hours of live, fun, casual, and even a little educational programming that’s as accessible as it is entertaining! Now, with the ability to tune in via Youtube, we can reach tens of thousands of customers and enthusiasts from around the globe through both live shows and replays. Like our online sales, these Live events are going to be a part of the Glass Academy identity for good.
When people talk about getting back to normal, we see it differently. As Michelle is quick to point out, none of us are the same as we were in February of 2020, and in a lot of ways, there’s just no going back: “Artists are always up for change. What we were pre-Covid is not what we are now and we’re always evolving so we really don’t want the business to be the same. We are looking into adding a beverage counter to the gallery area so customers can relax with a beverage and watch the glassblowing when we return to ‘normal’. In 5 years we feel we’ll be more of a tourist destination than a manufacturing facility as we once were.”
The show, our online community, and eCommerce capabilities will allow us to be the company we want to be; the show invites people into our studio to learn a craft and various forms of expression, but into a space that feels a lot like our family living room, too. It’s a connection and a sense of presenting who we are that we want to continue.
After all of this, Glass Academy is leaner; we’ve changed our hours of operation, our staffing, our classes, and more to better suit the new reality. Where we come together isn’t necessarily in the studio, nor is that where it needs to be. That’s why our live shows are called “The Gathering Point”. We’ve made a conscious decision to bring people together where there are and connect in new ways, while still treasuring the value that these connections have for all of us.
It may not be over, but Michelle is already looking back at the past year as a challenge and, in many ways, as a gift.
“In the end of 2019, I was wishing for a personal sabbatical. I was tired and needed a break from self-employment. I longed for some time off so I could regroup and assess where we were as a business and how best to move forward. Then Covid gave it to me. While I realize all the struggle and pain it brought, it also brought so much to our business. Joy, love, compassion, communication, strength, family, laughter, and home-cooked meals. It gave us a gift of sharing our passions with the world around us and gave our customers the freedom of feeling like they were part of our creative mission as well. They were educated to our craft and our creative behind-the-scenes process of how an artist develops a body of work. A community came together where we could all share the trials and tribulations of 2020 and have some glassblowing stories and the products to share as well!”
]]>These days, we need a bit more protection than 2 dimes in our pockets. We need organizations that protect the ocean, that teach us alternative pain management techniques, and others that support our mental health. Still, more non-profits exist to support front line workers and healthcare professionals, and animal rescue services to give us access to wonderful pets! The list is a never-ending supply of goodness, to bring awareness and reprieve to the human needs we have.
Here at the Glass Academy, we’ve given back to our community since inception. We have been pretty quiet about it, as we don’t like to boast about the dollar amount of donations because that’s not what's important. The real goal is to bring awareness and support to organizations that matter to us, to our community, and those we love.
Starting in 2021, the 2 Dimes Giveback program is a new partnership with like-minded organizations that share our passions. Ones that have positive messages, active members that have their hands in the community doing good, and ones that honor and share the values of the Glass Academy.
Through our Facebook Live Shows, we’re going to feature some of very important organizations to us and introduce you to them throughout the year! There will be special promotions that will give attention and energy to these causes and hopefully create new awareness. In addition, donations will be made from the Glass Academy, from each sale during a specific time period, to each organization, if applicable.
Join us as we continue to share our journey on our live shows, an ever-evolving blast into the future with excitement and a shared path of wellness and happiness!
]]>The work sold in the gallery is carefully curated and crafted from the team of skilled craftsmen that we train. There is no ‘student’ work in the gallery, rather, each item sold in the gallery was made with careful design choices, an extensive quality control process and years of glass training for the craftspeople. Yet, we could totally understand where one could come to this conclusion when coming into the ‘Glass Academy’, a glass school.
So, in the fall of 2019, we did some serious rebranding and came up with a fresh look for the Glass Academy that blended a new gallery concept into the picture. Something that would link the space together, yet also separate the space of manufacturing from the gallery. We even went so far to adjust the studio layout to accommodate a future beverage & refreshment station that will be coming down the line.
We pondered a name and settled on something that resonated with all of us, created a logo, signage, stickers and more! And then, BATCH Gallery was official! The name was a nod to the studio cat whose been with us since inception, as well the materials used in the glass making process. We felt it was the perfect name and we set the launch date for the new gallery: June 2020.
As the year 2020 rolled along, we were hopeful we could still do a summer launch. However, how could we do an opening or special event demos when we didn’t want to invite or encourage large crowds? That was the opposite of everything we wanted for the gallery. So instead, we pushed the date back and focused our efforts on the Facebook live shows and made other internal changes within the business.
By the end of 2020, it was evident that the landscape of retail was changing and it was time to launch the gallery as best we could. New social media pages are live for BATCH Gallery, marketing materials will be created to explain the two spaces within the building, and the interior space has been redesigned to match the changes. Yes, we were busy little elves over the holiday season this year!
Be sure to follow us on Instagram and on Facebook!
And today, we are happy to introduce: BATCH Gallery
Come join us this weekend and enjoy some special bonuses!
Saturday, January 9th | 11AM-4PM
BATCH Gallery features handcrafted, high quality, and carefully curated works of glass art, both functional and decorative. While many of your favorite traditional items like pumpkins and ornaments will still be sold, you’ll also begin to see new accessory items such as candles, tote bags, and puzzles with our products on them, as well as blank gift cards with gorgeous imagery. Seasonal themed shows will continue with new artists regularly being featured in the gallery. Along with different mediums and more décor items such as lamps and beautiful drinkware sets like pitchers & drinking glasses.
We will continue to feature all products on the website so online shoppers can enjoy the fun too. Packages will now arrive with the iconic B sticker on the outside of the box, representing the high-quality products sold at BATCH Gallery. Meanwhile, we will continue to hot stamp all items crafted in the Glass Academy Hot Shop with the signature GA logo so you will know exactly which items were made in our Dearborn studio.
Because there was some additional street and building upgrades this past summer, we feel like we received an overall rebranding in 2020! Inside the business we were busy adding new features like curbside pickup, a new point of sales system, adapted hours, and our biggest feat; an updated website shopping page to feature all our fabulous products for easy shopping wherever you are!
Classes will continue in 2021 with new items to choose from and free shipping of your creation will be included. 2020 was a perfect blend of timing and unexpected growth in each of the businesses, Glass Academy & BATCH Gallery, that reside within the Maistrapa building at 25331 Trowbridge.
We welcome you to come by in 2021 and take advantage of all the special promotions that BATCH Gallery has to offer, as well as the new Glass Academy classes.
We fully expect 2021 to be an exciting ride of live glassblowing shows and events highlighting great craftspeople, customers, and organizations filled with laughter, joy and good times to be had by all!
