Stained Glass Courses

We teach in many areas when working with stained glass. Many of the concepts are repeated in each session. Although the steps seem similar, they do become more challenging with each course as the degree of difficulty of the projects increases. Projects are rated with a difficulty factor ranging
from one to six and students are advised of the degree of difficulty before they take on any project. Tuition costs, Lab Fees, and Materials Fees are listed at the end of each course description.

REQUIREMENTS

SI601— Safety & Introduction to Stained Glass
The first project consists of a 16” x 18” panel (see attached photo). Students will learn the basic skills needed to create a beautifully crafted stained glass panel. The safe and proper use of all hand tool and chemicals will be stressed continually throughout the class. The focus will be on basic pattern making and cutting, the transferring of pattern pieces onto glass, glass cutting, grinding
techniques, foiling and soldering. This initial project will be helpful in assessing students’ ability to complete future projects. Tuition $595 Lab fee $25.

FOIL CONSTRUCTION

S602—Foil Construction Level 2
This intermediate level course is a continuation of Introduction to Foil Construction. Students will learn about the many different kinds of foil and their appropriate uses. Additionally, students will work on refining their glass cutting skills including the use of glass cutters to make interior and exterior curves. Prerequisite SI601. Tuition $595 Lab fee $25.

S603—Foil Construction Level 3
In this final and advanced foil class, the instructor will oversee the students’ production of an independently built project of their choice. Students will select from a variety of projects including
three-dimensional forms, flat panels, windows, vases and many others. Each project will demonstrate the student’s mastery of the concepts learned in the previous foil construction classes. Prerequisite SI601, S602. Tuition $595 Lab fee $25.

LEAD CAME CONSTRUCTION

S604—Introduction to Lead Came Construction
This class will introduce students to the use of lead came. The first project will be a 16” x 18” panel (see attached photo). Students will be instructed on the selection of metal channels for framing, how to select the right came to wrap pieces, and how to cut and shave came to fit. The will also be instructed on the proper techniques for soldering came including 45 degree angles, T overlap and intersection joints. Prerequisite SI601. Tuition $595 Lab fee $25.

S605—Lead Came Construction Level 2
In this intermediate level lead class, students will learn more about using various kinds of lead came joinery skills including joining intersections of leaded and copper foiled joints. Students will be taught the difference in various types (zinc, brass and copper) of lead cames to be used in projects. There will also be discussion if the different kinds of cames, such as round, H channel and U channel. Students will also be introduced to the art of adding patina to lead came to achieve unique finishes. Prerequisite SI601, S604. Tuition $595 Lab fee $25.

S606—Lead Came Construction Level 3
In this final and advanced lead class, the instructor will oversee the students’ completion of individual lead projects. Students will select a project and work independently to complete it. Each project will demonstrate the student’s mastery of the concepts learned in previous lead came construction classes. Prerequisite SI601, S604, S605. Tuition $595 Lab fee $25.

PANEL LAMP CONSTRUCTION

S607—Morton Construction
The building of a flat panel lamp utilizing the Morton System will be the focus of this class. The Morton System employs a device that is used to cut different shaped pieces with perfectly straight
edges. It also allows the student to cut duplicate pieces. Cut panels will be foiled and soldered to form a lampshade. Prerequisite SI601. Tuition $595 Lab fee $25.

TIFFANY LAMPSHADE

S608—Introduction to Tiffany Lampshade Construction
Building a Tiffany lampshade is a labor-intensive endeavor. A minimum of three classes is required to cover the building of the lampshade from start to finish. The first class will be devoted to selecting the mold and the glass for the shade, prepping the mold for pattern work and transferring the pattern shapes from the mold to the mylar that will be used to cut the glass. Prerequisite SI601. Tuition $595 Lab fee $25.

S609—Tiffany Lampshade Construction Level 2
In this class, students continue with the building of a Tiffany lampshade. The mylar pattern pieces will be cut and transferred onto the glass. The glass will be cut and all pieces will be ground. Since most lampshades will have approximately 400 to 1500 pieces, this is the most intense part of the building of the shade. Prerequisite SI601, S608. Tuition $595 Lab fee $25.

S610—Tiffany Lampshade Construction Level 3
This class of lampshade building will involve affixing the glass pieces to the mold and sizing them to fit perfectly. Each piece will be removed, foiled, and reaffix it to the mold where it will be tack soldered. Once the instructor has checked each shade for glass placement, the students will be allowed to remove the shade from the mold, complete the soldering inside and outside, patina the solder and
affix the mounting hardware. Prerequisite SI601, S608, S609. Lab fee $25.

S611—Stained Glass Independent Study
This advanced class will draw heavily on personal goals set forth by the student with guidance from the instructor. Students will advance their skills to create work that reflects their personal style. Mastery of tools and techniques, drawing, and a strong understanding of the medium will allow the student to excel. Prerequisite SI601 and teacher approval. Tuition $595 Lab fee $25.
