Hot Glass/Lampworking Courses

We offer a variety of courses in the realm of Hot Glass. Each specific course is designed for the student to reach and master a set of techniques which enables the student to follow their individual needs and talents within the Art Glass curriculum.

Prerequisites are listed within the courses and follow a natural procession for acquiring the skills necessary for advancement. Students will be advised and counseled on which courses will increase their talents and
abilities which will allow them to proceed to the next personal level. Tuition costs, Lab Fees, and Materials Fees for each course are listed at the end of the course description.

REQUIREMENTS

AB101 – Art Glass as a Business

This course will tie together all the instruction from previous classes and add to it the techniques of the business world. We will discuss everything necessary to create additional income from your art glass. Topics include selling your work, gallery shows, art fairs, and other selling venues. Rental vs. building your own studio, where to start, and how to get the necessary materials for maintaining a business. Marketing will talked about from business cards to promotional materials and web sites. Money matters and insurance for work will be addressed. Any additional art glass topics of interest can be open for discussion in terms of
business. Tuition $300 Lab Fee $25 Materials fee $25. This class is required for the Glass Certificate Program.

HOT GLASS

SI101- Safety & Introduction to Hot Glass

The first level of Glassblowing will address all the basic issues involved: Safety, history, tools, sketchbook use, and teamwork. Students will begin a path a self discovery by following instruction guided to teach mastery of the glass and tools. Basic drawing skills will be called upon to allow student and teacher conversation about the forming of the glass and the movements which allow it to be shaped. Slides, books, and various reference materials will be available to the student during class. Tuition $600 Lab Fee $25 Materials fee $25.


VASES

V102-Vases 2

In this course the students perfect the basics learned in SI101. Once mastered, the students will advance to the next level of shapes and forms. Color introduction will add a new depth of understanding and appreciation of form, as well as added beauty. Safety, tool instruction, historical basis, and drawing skills will advance to intermediate level. Prerequisite : SI101. Tuition $600 Lab Fee $25 Materials Fee: $35.

 V103- Vases 3

This course will summarize levels one and two while helping the students with any additional skills needed. In depth color exploration and techniques will open the dialog between the student and their work. Reference material, drawings, and Historical reference will be reviewed to show various techniques available.
Shop safety will be addressed as the students advance in their awareness of the equipment and procedures. Prerequisite: SI101 and V102. Tuition $600 Lab Fee $25 Materials fee $45.

V104- Vases Independent Study

This advanced class will draw heavily on personal goals set forth by the student with guidance from the instructor. Students will advance their skills to create work that reflects their personal style. Mastery of tools and techniques, drawing, and a strong understand of the medium will allow the student to excel. Advanced color work and new tools will be presented. Safety and furnace maintenance will be addressed. How to sell your work and different revenues of income will be addressed. Prerequisite: SI101, V102, V103, plus instructor approval. Tuition $600 Lab Fee $25 Materials fee $50.

 

PAPERWEIGHTS


P201- Paperweight Introduction / Level 1

In this beginning course students will be introduced to a variety of paperweights through the use of slides, books, and samples. Various techniques will be explained and demonstrated to the students. After demonstrating color preparation, safety techniques, tool basics, and rudimentary drawings, the students will begin to learn comprehension of how to create a variety of paperweights. Prerequisite: SI101. Tuition $600 Lab Fee $25 Materials fee $35.


P202 – Paperweight Level 2

This course will introduce the use of colored frit and mold use in paperweights. Color patterns, designs, and techniques will be discussed and demonstrated. Reference materials as well as historic materials will be available for student use. Safety, proper tool usage, and sketchbook design are discussed. Prerequisite SI101, P201 Tuition $600 Lab Fee $25 Materials fee $45.


P203- Paperweight Level 3

In this advanced class, colored cane will be demonstrated. Cane making, cutting, and pattern forming will be addressed. Students will learn how to create their own individual patterns and shapes to fit their own personal style. Molds, tool techniques, and safety will be reviewed as well as sketchbook design. Prerequisite SI101, P201 and P202. Tuition $600 Lab Fee $25 Materials fee $45.


P204 – Paperweight Independent Study

This course is designed for the student who wishes to pursue their own creative talents in the art of paperweight making. Color and technique will be stressed as students work with an instructor to
perfect their glass making abilities. Learning advanced design and technical abilities allow the student to excel. How to sell the finished product will be discussed. Safety and historical references will be reviewed. Prerequisites SI101, P201, P202, P303, and instructor approval. Tuition $600 Lab Fee $25 Materials fee $50.


DRINKING MUGS


M301- Introduction to Mug Making / Level 1

This beginning course will focus on the history of drinking vessels with handles. Demonstrations of various techniques and the proper placement of handles will be discussed. Types of handles and mug forms will be discussed and practiced. Safety, drawings, and personal interest will be addressed. Prerequisite SI101. Tuition $600 Lab Fee $25 Materials fee $35.

M302 – Mugs Level 2

In this advanced course students will make the 7 basic mug shapes and handles. Color will be introduced to give the mugs added definition as well as style. Individual style will be addressed as well as color/design theory. Advanced handle placement and sketchbook work, along with safety will be discussed. Prerequisite SI101 and M301. Tuition $600 Lab Fee $25 Materials fee $45.

LAMPWORKING


SI401 – Safety/ Introduction to Lampworking

The first level of Lampworking will address all basic issues involving the torch. Safety, tools, sketchbook and the work station. Students will begin a path of self discovery by following guided instruction which will introduce them to the torch, glass, and tools. Basic drawing skills will be called upon to help execute
design. Tuition $600 Materials fee $45.


L402 – Solid Sculpture Level 2

In this Level one course students will be introduced to the torch and hands on basics including lighting the torch, adjusting the flame, and proper placement of the hand tools. Flame control will be a major course of discussion and practice as the students use larger amounts of glass over the torch. Annealing and proper cooling of the work, both over the torch and in the annealer, will be emphasized. Safety and historical references will be part of discussion. Prerequisite SI401. Tuition $600 Material fee $45.

L403 – Solid Sculpture Level 3

On this more advanced level, students will learn the application of color to the solid glass mass. Proper placement of bits, correct heating, and cooling will be the focus. Traditional techniques, modern lampworking, and advanced techniques will be covered. How to develop new products, and improve on form will be addressed. Safety, history, and sketchbook design are all incorporated into this level. Prerequisite SI401, L402. Tuition $600 Material fee $45.


L404 – Solid Sculpture Independent Study

Advanced students can take this course to further their knowledge at the torch. Safety and proper start up techniques will be emphasized. Sketchbook ideas will be brought to the torch and worked upon with guidance as the skill of the student increases. Student initiativeallows the student to excel in their chosen area of concentration with teacher involvement and oversight. Prerequisite SI401, L402, L403. Tuition $600 Material fee $45.


BEADMAKING


B501 – Beadmaking Level 1

In this course students will learn and improve upon the basics of the torch and how to set it up. Using historical references, students will draw upon various demonstrations to learn how to make beads. Simple color patters and technical ideas will be discussed, followed by hands on work at the torch. Open torch time will be available at all times for advancement of skills. Prerequisite SI401. Tuition $600 Material fee $45.


B502 – Beadmaking Level 2

Level 2 will introduce many of the various color techniques available to the students. Color will be emphasized as the students draw and develop their own unique style of beads. Dichroic, millefiori, hollow, feathering, festooning, and eye beads are all topics of discussion and demonstrations at the torch. Safety and historical reference will be addressed. Prerequisite SI401, B501. Tuition $600 Material fee $45.

B503 – Beadmaking Independent Study

For the advanced student this class will allow the student to work with advanced concepts. Use of gold and silver foil, filigrana, and twisted cane will be demonstrated and taught. Individual studies will be based upon the students personal goals and interests. Safety and shop maintenance will be highlighted as the student is
expected to maintain their own torch by this level. Prerequisite SI401, B501, B502. Tuition $600 Material fee $45.
